After the dramatics of the first game of the World Series, Saturday’s contest was far more straightforward—that is, until the top of the ninth inning (more on that in a bit). Los Angeles Dodgers hitters jumped on New York Yankees starter Carlos Rodón. The lefty gave up three home runs—including back-to-back jacks to Teoscar Hernández and Freddie Freeman—and he was chased out of the game in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto had one of his best outings of the year, and the final score was Los Angeles 4, New York 2. The win puts the Dodgers up 2–0 in the series.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Yankees manager Aaron Boone is making a pitching change. Jake Cousins has taken over for Carlos Rodón after Rodón surrendered six hits and four runs over 3.1 innings of work.

For the Dodgers, the Game 3 nod goes to Walker Buehler, who returned midseason following a second Tommy John surgery. The veteran right-hander tight roped his way through four scoreless innings in Game 3 of the NLCS.
The Yankees are only the fourth team out of 25 to win Game 4 in the World Series after losing the first three. No team in World Series history has ever forced a Game 6 after falling behind 3-0. The Yankees will try to do that back at home on Wednesday with their ace, Gerrit Cole, on the mound.
The New York Yankees will try to make history on Wednesday night in World Series Game 5. The Yankees dropped the first three games against the Dodgers in the 2024 Fall Classic, but they kept their season alive on Tuesday with a come-from-behind win in Game 4. Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam in a game that will also be remembered for a bizarre fan interference incident involving Mookie Betts in the first inning.
No team has ever come back to win the World Series from a three-game deficit, but with the Yankees’ dominant performance on Tuesday (and Shohei Ohtani’s injury, which is clearly still bothering him), fans are wondering if this might be the year.
World series game 3
Anthony Volpe delivered the biggest hit for the Yankees this entire series: a grand slam that erased the lead the Dodgers got when Freddie Freeman notched a home run in a record-setting sixth straight World Series game.
This was another ineffective evening for the Yankees’ captain Aaron Judge, another night when they struggled to get help from the bottom half of their lineup (when they had two aboard and two out with Anthony Banda on the mound for L.A. in the seventh, Gleyber Torres was called out looking for strike three), another night when their starter didn’t have it. Though Verdugo’s two-out, two-run homer in the ninth put a late jolt into the building, it was too late to spark a real rally.
This is of particular import for the Dodgers because Shohei Ohtani, who did at least have a hit on Tuesday night, really does not look like himself this series. That shoulder is obviously bothering him; this has to be the most he has ever grimaced over a two-game span. The Dodgers may need Freeman to hit like Ohtani has all year. Fortunately, so far, he has been.
Yankees: Jose Trevino got the start in Game 3 over Austin Wells, who has gone 4-for-41 this postseason and 1-for-8 over the first two World Series games. Rizzo and Volpe flipped spots in the order from Games 1 and 2.
“I think this team is just different than the teams we’ve had before,” said Buehler, “in terms of the way we operate in there with the 26 guys that are active that day. There’s this bond that’s kind of different. We play for each other.”
Another run came in the third, when NLCS MVP Tommy Edman drew a walk, advanced to second on an Ohtani groundout and then made a great read on Mookie Betts’ opposite-field single to right to motor home and make it 3-0. The Dodgers could have broken the game open that inning after they loaded the bases and compelled Boone to go to his bullpen by bringing in Mark Leiter Jr. with two outs. But Will Smith grounded out to end the threat.
