Thackeray snarked that charades were enjoyed for “enabling the many ladies amongst us who had beauty to display their charms, and the fewer number who had cleverness, to exhibit their wit”. In his Vanity Fair, the height of Rebecca Sharp’s social success is brought on by her performances of acting charades before the Prince Regent. The first scene—”first two syllables”—displays a Turkish lord dealing with a slaver and his odalisque before being garroted by the sultan’s chief black eunuch; the second—”last two syllables”—finds a Turk, his consort, and his black slave praying at sunrise when an enormous Egyptian head enters and begins singing. The answer—Agamemnon—is then acted out by Becky’s husband, while she makes her (first) appearance as Clytemnestra. After refreshments, another round begins, partially in pantomime: the first scene shows a household yawningly finishing a game of cribbage and preparing for bed; the second opens on the household bustling with activity as daybreak prompts bells ringing, arguments over receipts, collection of the chamber pots, calls for carriages, and greetings to new guests; the third closes with a ship’s crew and passengers tossed about by a storm with strong winds. The answer—nightingale—is then (somewhat mistakenly) acted out by Becky in the role of a singing French marquise, recalling both Lacoste’s 1705 tragic opera Philomèle and an arriviste lover and wife of Louis XIV. Apart from its importance in the book, the scenes were subsequently considered models of the genre.
2001 world series 7 game
For the second consecutive year, Fox carried the World Series with its top broadcast team, Joe Buck and Tim McCarver (himself a Yankees broadcaster). This was the first year of Fox’s exclusive rights to the World Series (in the previous contract, Fox only broadcast the World Series in even numbered years while NBC broadcast it in odd numbered years), which it has held since. This particular contract also had given Fox exclusive rights to the entire baseball postseason, which aired over its family of networks, but shortly after the World Series, Fox sold its cable outlet Fox Family Channel, on which it aired Division Series games, shortly after the World Series ended, to Disney, which renamed the channel to ABC Family; since this made the channel a corporate sibling of ESPN, Disney would move those games to ESPN in 2003 after airing them for one more season on ABC Family.
The 2001 World Series was the championship series of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) 2001 season. The 97th edition of the World Series, it was a best-of-seven playoff between the National League (NL) champion Arizona Diamondbacks and the three-time defending World Series champions and American League (AL) champion New York Yankees. The underdog Diamondbacks defeated the heavily favored Yankees, four games to three to win the series. Considered one of the greatest World Series of all time, its memorable aspects included two extra-inning games and three late-inning comebacks. Diamondbacks pitchers Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were both named World Series Most Valuable Players.
Their roster was filled with veterans.4 T.J. Quinn of the New York Daily News wrote of the Diamondbacks, “Unlike the Yankees, who have turned the World Series into a second home, most Diamondbacks know this could be their only chance.”5 “This is what you wait your whole life for, since you first stepped into Little League,” said first baseman Mark Grace, who had signed with Arizona in December 2000 after 13 seasons with the Chicago Cubs.6
On a 2-and-2 count, Womack pulled a double to right. Cummings scored and the game was tied, 2-2. Rivera then hit Counsell to load the bases.18 The Yankees still believed in their closer. Martinez later said, “Even when the bases were loaded I felt like Rivera was going to get out of it because he always does.”19 Echoed Jeter: “When he comes in the game, it’s over. That’s always the way I feel.”20
Game 5 looked to go the distance as well with Mussina returning to save face against Miguel Batista. The veteran right-hander improved greatly and allowed only five hits (including a pair of solo home runs in the fifth) while walking three and striking out ten. One of the two solo homers hit in the fifth came off the bat of little-used backup Rod Barajas (a .160 hitter in the regular season) who was in for starter Damian Miller (a late scratch with a strained calf). With the Diamondbacks holding a 2-0 lead, Arizona manager Bob Brenly returned to Kim to start the ninth. Jorge Posada opened the inning with a double but the Korean sidearmer easily retired the next two batters. With one out to go, things finally appeared to go in Kim’s favor, but Scott Brosius begged to differ with a clutch, two-run blast that tied the game at two apiece. Needles to say, the repentive reliever was removed immediately in favor of Mike Morgan, who lasted two-innings himself before being replaced by Albie Lopez in the 12th. Despite Arizona’s fresh arm, Game 4’s finale was replayed after Alfonso Soriano singled (with one out) scoring Chuck Knoblauch with the 3-2, game-winning run. After sprinting to a two game lead, the National League champs were now forced into a do-or-die situation for Game 6. Once again, Johnson returned for Arizona to extend the race and responded with a brilliant six hitter that was sweetened with seven strikeouts. At the plate, Johnson’s teammates dominated as well, scoring fifteen times over the first four innings for a shocking 15-2 massacre.
